The Albera Mountains are the easternmost stretch of the Pyrenees, ranging from Perthus Mountain Pass to the Mediterranean Sea, between the Alt Empordà Plain (Catalonia) and Roussillon Plain (France).

The south face of the Albera Massif presents two very different zones.

The more humid western end has Central European-type vegetation, with beech and oak woods, whereas the drier Mediterranean end has brushwood and cork oaks, and is host to the last populations of Hermann’s tortoise.
