Girona Greenways won 2nd Prize at the European Greenways Awards in 2003, a Special Mention of Excellence in 2007, and 1st Prize in the Exemplary Initiatives category in 2011 for its “Discovering the Secrets of Girona Greenways” project. The greenways enable users to walk or cycle from the thrilling Girona Pyrenees to the welcoming Costa Brava, through five of the eight counties in Girona province: Baix Empordà, Gironès, Selva, Garrotxa, and Ripollès.

The 125-km route is divided into four stretches. The Iron and Coal Route goes from Ogassa to Ripoll via Sant Joan de les Abadesses; the Olot-Girona Narrow-Gauge Railway Route runs from Olot to Girona through the towns and villages in the valleys of the Rivers Ter, Brugent and Fluvià; the Girona-Sant Feliu de Guíxols Narrow-Gauge Railway Route starts in Girona and runs along the eastern edge of La Selva Plain to Llagostera, continuing through the valley of the River Riudaura until reaching Sant Feliu de Guíxols on the Mediterranean Sea; and finally, the coastal “Little Train” Route, links the towns of Palamós and Palafrugell.
