On the first weekend in September, Besalú goes back a thousand years in history and transforms the old quarter into a fantasy venue where visitors are transported back to medieval times.

The value of this historical and architectural site makes Besalú one of the most important mediaeval towns in Catalonia. The 2-day fair involves all the townspeople, as well as the streets, shops, buildings, river walk, defence walls, squares, and hidden corners of the town.

Guided by their shepherds, the sheepdogs have to herd the sheep into pens placed there for the occasion.

The festival was originally held to pay homage to shepherds, men who lived in isolation for most of the year, on the day the flocks were brought down from the mountains. The formerly non-competitive event has evolved over the years and has recently become very popular, attracting a growing number of visitors and participants.

The town of Rialp is overwhelmed with music every year, as top-quality musicians offer concerts enabling us to appreciate the beauty and the technique of their performances.

Public attendance helps to boost and consolidate this major cultural activity and make it a benchmark event among summer music festivals in Catalonia. This is not just any festival: the excellent quality of the programme compares very favourably with other more established classical music events.
