The fire festivals of the Catalan Pyrenees, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, are among the region’s most emblematic and spectacular traditions. Held on various dates throughout the year, especially during the summer months, these celebrations have fire at their heart and keep alive an ancestral heritage closely linked to the cycles of nature, protection and renewal.

In the regions of Alta Ribagorça, Pallars Jussà and Pallars Sobirà, as night falls, the magical descent of the falles begins. The fallaires make their way down the mountain carrying burning falles to the village. Each flame carries a message of hope and good fortune for the community.

In the Vall d’Aran, the villages of Les and Arties also celebrate the Crema de l’Haro and Crema del Taro, respectively. During these rituals, a large fir tree trunk is set alight in the village square on Midsummer’s Eve, in a spectacular celebration that combines Christianised customs with ancient Celtic roots.

At the winter solstice, on 24 December, towns in the Berguedà region such as Bagà and Sant Julià de Cerdanyola celebrate the Fia-faia, another traditional fire festival. Here, the faies—large falles lit at dusk—are carried through the streets, creating a magical and captivating atmosphere.

Throughout the year, and especially during the summer months, these celebrations offer a unique opportunity to discover a living culture that has been passed down from generation to generation.
