During the twelfth stage of the Transversal GR 1 stage you continue to make headway though the undulating landscapes of Baix Berguedà, eroded by the streams that descend from nearby mountains. In this stage you can enjoy the tranquillity of the woods in the area of Cal Xiulans and discover some of the wetter places, such as the Pontarró stream and the Riba stream. From Olvan onwards the farming and livestock landscape of Lluçanès begins to be broken up by the emergence of industrial plants and factories: you approach Catalonia’s industrial river par excellence, which has been at the centre of the important social and economic changes brought on by the Industrial Revolution. This is a short stage that will allow you to regain your strength -you are now at the midway point of the route- or, if you prefer, you can join up with the following stage.

Route

You begin the twelfth stage of the GR 1 route in (1) Sant Andreu de Sagàs (0:00h - 737m). From the church plaza you follow the white and red GR signs heading southwest. You go around some fields of cereal crops, and very gradually, you turn towards the right (NW). For a brief stretch, your route coincides with the old road, but you soon head off on the left along a path. You pass the Mas de Cal Xiulans and head into a forest. You go down a gloomy ravine and arrive at Pontarró stream.

You cross the stream and reach the other bank (W). You continue inside a wooded area, walking over a carpet of sedimentary rocks, fossils that bear witness to the fact that this zone was a lake basin or an inland sea millions of years ago. You arrive at the country house of (2) Collservera (1:15h - 600m) and, a few metres further on, you cross the C-62 road. You continue to move west and soon cross the road again. You make a gentle descent and come to Riba stream. Then, keep going northwest and the landscape becomes visibly more linked to farming. You continue along the royal route and Calle de la Carretera and enter the beautiful municipality of (3) Olvan (1:45h - 558m).

You leave the town via Plaza Major and Calle del Forn and pass Cal Pubill. Go down to Rec de Cabots, which you cross, and continue along the main path. You move forward through fields, forests and past the odd farm. You bypass some industrial plants and a few metres further ahead you will once again cross the C-62 road, this time over a bridge. There are an increasing number of buildings. Finally, you reach the Llobregat river, and you are now in (4) Gironella (2:35h - 452m), the end point of the twelfth stage.

Highlights

The charm of the farming and livestock landscapes in the area around Sagàs.

The carpet of sedimentary rocks -reminders of the existence of an old inland basin- that is found in Pontarró stream, before you reach Collservera.

Arrival in Gironella, crossing the Llobregat river, with its rich industrial heritag

Did you know that...

There is a project called Camí del Llobregat -the future GR 270- that will run along the 170 km of this watercourse? When it is finished, it will be possible to visit the entire Llobregat basin, on foot or bike, from its source in Castellar de n’Hug until its mouth, in the Llobregat delta. Or, you could indeed do it the other way round.

Do not miss...

Relaxing and losing track of time in the peaceful and pleasant Pontarró stream. Around this street there is a pretty riverside wood where it is easy to find a shaded area to rest for a while. Or, if it is very hot, you could look for a pool of water to dip your feet into.

Observations

The route for this stage is quite exposed to the sun. If you undertake the route during the summer months it is important to drink water often and protect yourself from the sun in order to avoid heatstroke.
